Online stores allow people to reach a wider range of customers than they would ever imagine reaching outside of the Internet. Developing an online store is not the hardest part though, all you really need is a website and a pre-made shopping cart to handle customer orders and process payments. The hardest part falls on attracting visitors and potential customers in order to sell your product, make money, and become successful. In doing this you will need to focus on an important area called Niche Marketing that will generate large amounts of targeted traffic and get your website noticed among the thousands of other online stores.

Niche Marketing

Before you start building you website you will need to determine the unique needs of your potential audience, and look for ways to tailor your product or services to meet their needs. This can be done by finding your website’s Niche.

Niche Marketing is targeting a product or service to a small portion of a market that is not being readily served by mainstream marketers. Niche marketing will allow you to compete in competitive areas, or not so competitive areas, where you normally would not have a chance, depending on your niche. What this means is, instead of selling an item or service to the general population you would narrow you target to selling a specialized item or service to a smaller audience that is searching the Internet with specific keywords.

For example, don’t laugh but lets say you are selling pasteurized goat milk. You would not want to target the general population because as we know the majority of the population drinks cow milk. But if you narrowed your target to consumers who are allergic to cow’s milk then you are focusing on a much smaller group of consumers. In turn you are attracting a more targeted audience of potential buyers by providing them with a healthy substitute to mainstream milk. Now when building a website you will want to build your site around your targeted audience or Niche, which in this case is people who are allergic to cows milk.

Honing in on a particular niche will allow you to compete competitively with other online stores that are already known to Internet users. Also you will have much less competition because it will eliminate other online stores that are not geared toward your particular niche.

Choosing the right niche market though is only half the battle. For other ways to generate traffic to your online store you should look at the Attracting Visitors Page in order to better increase your sites page rank among search engines.

Adding a Shopping Cart

A shopping cart is an application the acts as an online store’s ordering process. It’s basically the interface between a website and its deeper infrastructure, allowing consumers to select, review, modify, and purchase merchandise. In order to have a successful online store you will need to incorporate a shopping cart that meets the needs of your online market.  There are many ways you can add a shopping cart to your website and make it an online store. There is also shopping cart software that you can purchase separately from other website on the Internet. There are literally hundreds to choose from so you will need to do some homework and find the one that fits your needs and the needs of your online store.

Excepting Online Payments

If you are just starting out with your online store and have a limited budget you may want to look into using PayPal to except credit card payments for when your customers are ready to check out. PayPal is free to sign up for and is a very secure way to purchase goods and services over the Internet. The only time PayPal will charge you is when a transaction is made by taking a very small percentage of that transaction. If you do decide to use PayPal make sure you incorporate this fee into your product pricing.

Another cheap way you can accomplish having an online store is by using eBay. With eBay it basically acts as your shopping cart application by allowing people to purchase your goods through their site. All you would have to do is set up a normal information website telling visitors about your product, why they should buy it, etc, etc. Then add a link to your site that upon clicking takes the potential customer to your eBay store where they can go through the ordering process. You will also gain traffic from eBay itself when users search their website for a product or service that you may be selling. eBay is free to set up an account with, but like PayPal they charge you a small fee with each transaction.
